Bring some fresh air into your yoga practice on our Yoga & Hiking Retreats in Spain.   Yoga and Hiking complement each other perfectly. Hiking is great for the heart & lungs but can create tight muscles and tenderness in the leg joints.  With the addition of yoga to help loosen hamstrings, build flexibility and strength, deepen breathing and improve mobility means that one exercise will fill the gaps left by the other so your health and fitness has an overall boost!

Altea Yoga Holiday

Our Yoga & Hiking retreat holidays are held in the town of Altea near the sea, an hour north of Alicante – we offer an airport transfer service.

Altea is a lovely Spanish town, considered to be one of the prettiest in this region.  Sheltered by coast hugging mountains that tumble to the sea, the weather here is warm  all year.  You will be staying near to the ‘old town’ of Altea – the historical heart of the town – with it’s breath-taking views out across the bay, cobbled streets and delicious selection of tapas bars, artisan studios and boutiques.    This really is the perfect location for a yoga and hiking retreat holiday.

Your Accommodation

Based at a peaceful 300 year old Olive Farm that’s been owned by the same Spanish family for generations.  The family converted the vacant farm in the 1990’s into a lovely 4-star country house hotel with pool, small gym & sauna and 22 bedrooms.  This sweet little hotel has a great position as it sits at the very point where the countryside meets the edge of Altea’s nearby ‘old town’ – regarded as one of the prettiest towns in the area – and so we have tranquility and country views & yet, we’re an easy 10 minute walk to Altea and 25 minutes to the sea.

The 22 spacious bedrooms are superbly equipped with satellite TV, telephone, heating, air-con, safety deposit, free WiFi, hairdryer, ensuite bathroom with fluffy robes and complimentary toiletries.   The onsite kitchen offers traditional Spanish & Mediterranean dishes whilst Vincenta, the hotel owner, brings fresh eggs from her free range hens and bakes a fresh cake each morning to add to the fantastic buffet breakfast spread. Yum!

The Hikes

Our first hike will be a great opportunity to stretch your legs and get to know everyone as we’ll be taking a 13k walk through the countryside near the hotel on quiet lanes passing by orange, lemon & avocado groves. You’ll be out for 3-3.5 hours.

Our second hike is one of our most favourites – the Puig Campana mountain which is the second highest peak on our coast at 1408m and 66ft higher than Ben Nevis!  But don’t worry, whilst this walk is classed as ‘moderate to strong’ due to the initial steady ascent, we’ll not be climbing to the top.  Instead, we’ll be taking a leisurely 4-4.5 hour route on tracks & trails as we circumnavigate the mountain and enjoy the ever changing 360 degree views to the coast & inland.  We’ll stop for a picnic lunch on the mountain and no doubt will see much of the mountain flora & fauna which includes eagles, falcons, choughs, red squirrels and wild boar.

There’ll also be chance to do a 3rd self guided 17k coastal walk at your own pace using the maps and our ‘locals’ advice.

All walks are optional & whilst you don’t have to be super fit, we do recommend you have a reasonable level of fitness and have no serious heart/blood pressure issues, reduced mobility or recovering from recent surgery.

The Yoga

Yoga boatYou’ll be practicing yoga twice a day before breakfast & dinner. The yoga sessions combine Hatha, Vinyasa Flow and Yin Yoga to improve your strength, flexibility and range of movement. Morning sessions focus on simple flowing sequences to stretch muscles and open joints whilst we synchronise breath with movement so that your practice becomes a calming moving meditation. Evening classes are more restorative where we will hold postures a little longer using the breath to move deeper within, helping you re-connect with your inner peace. Bliss!

The level is suitable for keen beginners, those with a lapsed practice & intermediate yogis. Our teaching style is relaxed – no pressure to be perfect. Likewise there’s no room for ego as it’s not what we’re about. It doesn’t matter what other people can do, just work with what you have. Be patient, keep practicing and your body will open up & let you back in.

Programme Overview : Yoga & Hiking Retreat Holiday

Day One – Let our airport transfer* meet you at Alicante & bring you to the yoga hotel. Time to settle in & unpack before a welcome gathering & our first yoga session prior to dinner.

Day Two – Awaken your body & senses to the day with a ‘mini-breakfast’ of fresh fruits & Yogi Teas prior to the 90 minute yoga class to open & inspire you. Enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast/brunch before departing on our first walk through the local countryside. Return to hotel mid afternoon to relax – maybe take a dip in the pool – before this evenings restorative yoga class and dinner at the hotel.

Day Three – Nurture your body with fresh fruits & Yogi teas before the morning yoga practice & breakfast. Today is a day of leisure for you to explore the local town of Altea, pamper yourself with some therapies or relax by the pool. Late afternoon Mudras, Meditation & Mantras workshop before dinner.    Supper tonight is at a local restaurant… join us if you like, its not compulsory.

Day Four – Enjoy a hearty breakfast before the short drive into the mountains for a day hill walking including stop to enjoy your  picnic lunch with amazing views.  Return to hotel late afternoon for a rest before closing the day in a deeply relaxing  yoga session. Tonight is a free evening, you choose where to dine from any of the delicious local restaurants or dine at the hotel.

Day Five – After morning fruits & tea and glorious morning yoga to stretch out after yesterday’s walk, the rest of the day is free for you to enjoy as you please. You could join the optional Spanish cookery workshop & lunch – a delicious way to spend the afternoon! – book a massage, relax by the pool or wander into town for an explore. The day draws to a close with a restorative yoga session prior to dinner at the hotel.

Day Six – Have a lie-in, you deserve it! Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before our transfers* back to Alicante airport.

* Airport Transfers. Operate from Alicante airport pick up on arrival will be between 11am-13.00 & arrive back at airport on final day for midday. Transfers take an hour & cost €40 per person, each way.

We aim to leave airport on arrival day between 11-13.00 and arrive back at airport on final day for midday.  Transfers take an hour to our yoga hotel & cost €40 each way.   Flights outside of our group transfers can be accommodated with a private taxi (€100-120) or ask about local transport options.
